First visit to the fertility expert

Sometimes, only a fertility expert can assist a couple struggling to conceive.

When you first visit a fertility expert, you should bring with you all the results of any fertility tests you may have had in the past.

This will be of invaluable help to the doctor and will accelerate both the diagnosis and the treatment of any infertility problems.

Tests that will be of great help to the doctor are the following:

For the woman:

  • Last smear test
  • Screening for chlamydia, mycoplasma, ureaplasma
  • Titre of rubella antibodies
  • HIV, hepatitis and syphilis serological tests
  • Hormonal blood tests (FSH, LH, AMH, TSH, T3, T4, prolactin, testosterone, DHEA-S)
  • Karyotype testing
  • Hysterosalpingogram
  • Reports of previous surgical interventions (e.g. laparoscopy, hysteroscopy)
  • Reports from any previous IVF attempts

For the man:

  • Sperm analysis and culture
  • Screening for chlamydia, mycoplasma, ureaplasma
  • HIV, hepatitis and syphilis serological tests
  • Karyotype testing

Questions you may want to ask the fertility expert at the end of your first visit:

What may be the cause of our fertility problem?

Do we need to have any more tests?

What treatment do you suggest we have?

If this doesn’t work, what will the next steps be?
